Tales, Trials and Triumphs: Echoes of Atlin

Aá Tlien, a hamlet nestled in the northwest corner of British Columbia less than 50 kilometres from the Yukon and Alaska borders, is Taku River Tlingit territory and the village site that has been their seasonal home for centuries. Imposing mountains, huge lakes, verdant meadows, and abundant wildlife compose the spectacular scenery and a precious natural environment.

Tales, Trials and Triumphs: Echoes of Atlin offers images which tell stories and capture the everyday experiences of the people who have inhabited the land. Many of these images have not been previously published and have been gathered from private collections, museums and archives across North America. Interspersed are tales of the courage and tenacity of the settlers who learned from their Indigenous neighbours, whose world was changed irrevocably with the arrival of several thousand gold seekers. When the allure of gold had dissipated, Tlingit and settlers pooled their talents to provide new experiences for tourists from the outside and to create an enduring and resilient community.
